E3 2018 was awesome!

E3 2018 is over and my, oh my, what an E3 it was. Many of the games I wanted to see at E3 were shown and some games on my wish list got announced. There was no Dark Cloud 3 or a new Dino Crisis game but I will maintain hope that one day they will happen.

There were two games that were announced at the Bethesda’s show, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI. Whilst I am very excited for these games, the trailers for them were pretty much just to confirm their existence so they won’t be on this list. Another game that was announced at Bethesda’s show was DOOM Eternal (Anybody who knows me well, knows that I am a big fan of DOOM). The new DOOM game would be on this list but we didn’t see any gameplay however there is information about the game coming at QuakeCon.

All the games in this list had some gameplay shown or had a good amount of information about the game released by the gaming media. As with every list this is subjective, what games are on my list may not be on yours. Anyway, enough of me rambling, here are my top 10 games of E3 2018.

 

10. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro is the next game by Dark Souls developer From Software and it looks awesome. My initial thoughts of Sekiro was that it was a “Souls” game set in a medieval Japanese setting. However after watching the trailer several more times and reading previews, Sekiro is not a Souls style game, it is its own thing.

Character customisation is gone and so is stat levelling and multiplayer. Sekiro isn’t a Souls game and I quite happy about that. It’s about time From Software tried something new otherwise the Souls format will become stale.

Sekiro has got more in common with Tenchu, a game series that From Software used to develop. We don’t know that much else about Sekiro but the trailer that they showed of was pretty cool. It’s scheduled to release in early 2019.

 

9. Dead or Alive 6

I wasn’t expecting Dead or Alive 6 to be announced this year, let alone E3. Yet here we are and Dead or Alive 6 is real and it looks fantastic. It seems as though that developer Team Ninja have FINALLY realised that Dead or Alive, has a cool and deep fighting system that is fun to use and to learn.

It also looks as if Team Ninja are toning down the “fan service” a bit in Dead or Alive 6. I didn’t mind the fan service in DOA but it annoyed the hell out of me when Team Ninja focused on that rather than the fighting mechanics themselves. Finally it seems to be the reverse in DOA6.

If Team Ninja do this right, then hopefully we could see more fighting game fans see past the fan service and find a fun and in-depth fighter. The more people playing DOA and realise that the game is more than just fan service the better.

 

8. Cyberpunk 2077

We finally got another trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 and oh boy what a trailer it was. The game certainly had one of the best trailers at E3 as it showed action and some brilliant futuristic set pieces.

Cyberpunk 2077 would have been higher up on my list if we saw some gameplay of it but the impressions from what the gaming press and other media have seen, it sounds amazing. Everyone who saw the behind the scenes demo, seems to be blown away by it.

After reading several articles and watching multiple videos about what people saw in the behind closed doors demo, I am even more interested in Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s a video by the awesome YongYea, who saw the demo.

I can’t wait to see some gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 myself. The question is, when will that be?

 

7. Devil May Cry 5

One of the games on my wish list got announced and I couldn’t be happier. Devil May Cry 5 got announced at the Microsoft show with one of the best trailers at E3 2018 and in my opinion, it had the best music in any trailer shown at E3. Seriously, the music in the Devil May Cry 5 announcement trailer is amazing and I can’t stop listening to it.

The announcement trailer showed Nero being a cocky bastard which is nothing new, as he was like this in DMC 4. From the trailer alone I could tell that Nero’s “could care less” attitude had increased by a fair amount. The combat looks like the traditional “Capcom style” but improved a bit. We won’t know how much the combat has improved until game has come out.

I have to say that this game is a looker, holy damn. Devil May Cry uses the RE Engine, the same game engine that Resident Evil 7 used. I was a little worried when we didn’t see Dante in the trailer but Capcom (you tease) showed the main man right at the end of trailer.

Devil May Cry 5 would have been have been in my “top 5” maybe even the “top 3” games of E3 if they showed some more gameplay of it. Whilst I would’ve liked to have seen more gameplay, I am incredibly hyped for Devil May Cry 5. It’s been 10 years since the last numbered entry, I’ve been waiting a while for the fifth instalment but finally the wait will soon be over.

 

6. Spider-Man

I’ve seen enough of Spider-Man to decide that I am getting it and the gameplay that was shown at Sony’s E3 conference was fantastic. I knew we were getting a new look at Spider-Man but I had already decided that Spider-Man is a game that I need to play. My worry here is that they are showing too much.

My worry turned into hype as the gameplay that closed out the Sony conference was amazing (casually inserted a Spider-Man pun). The gameplay shown was all action and showcased some of the villains we will be going against in Spider-Man such as Electro, Scorpion, Rhino and Vulture. It was a fantastic piece of gameplay that thankfully, did not show off too much.

I’m definitely getting Spider-Man but more than likely not on day one as I will still be playing Dragon Quest XI. Why does Spider-Man have to release so close to Dragon Quest XI?

 

5. Super Smash Bros: Ultimate

Everyone is here! Every single character that has been playable in Smash Bros history is playable in Super Smash Bros: Ultimate. Making every character in Smash Bros history playable, is an incredible feat.

As a result of every character returning, there won’t be many new characters in Smash Bros: Ultimate which I was expecting after learning that every character in Smash Bros history is playable. The number of fighters in Smash Bros: Ultimate is mind-blowing. Seriously, well done Nintendo.

Nintendo did announce one new character, Ridley from the Metroid series and he looks crazy good.

I need to play Super Smash Bros: Ultimate, it looks fantastic.

 

4. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

After Assassin’s Creed: Origins restored my faith in the Assassin’s Creed series, I was quite looking forward to Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, not just because of how good Origins was but also because the game is set in Ancient Greece which is a very interesting period of history.

Ubisoft left Odyssey til last, presumably to close off the show strongly and boy did they. The Assassin’s Creed series has always had some lite-RPG elements since the second game but last year’s Origins took it to a new level. Odyssey is embracing the RPG elements as Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is a pretty much a full-blown RPG now. You can customise your character with various pieces of clothing and armour. There are dialogue options which is a first for the series and now you can choose which character you want to play the entire game with from the start of the game.

The gameplay shown at Ubisoft’s conference was enough to get me wanting to play the game. It had some cool new combat mechanics which evolve upon the system that was implemented in Origins.

I might have to wait a little while after release as there are so many games coming out during September – October that I cannot possibly afford to get every single one that I want. Even though I will more than likely have to wait until Christmas to play Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, I haven’t been this excited about the Assassin’s Creed series in a long time. Come on Ubisoft, make it two in a row.

 

3. Kingdom Hearts III

Everyone who knows me personally, follows me on Twitter, follows me here on WordPress and has read my content knows how much the Kingdom Hearts series means to me. The series isn’t perfect but it has helped me get through some tough times.

As you’d expect, I am eagerly awaiting Kingdom Hearts III and the three trailers we got at E3 2018 were absolutely wonderful. We know that Frozen is coming to Kingdom Hearts III and Pirates of the Caribbean is returning. Both worlds looks gorgeous. Pirates looks pretty darn real and the Frozen world looks like was taken straight from the film, it looks that good.

I don’t need to say anything else really, other than that I can’t wait for Kingdom Hearts III. Hurry up January 29th.

 

2. Resident Evil 2 Remake

It’s real! Capcom have finally shown of the Resident Evil 2 Remake after years of silence and dear god does it look good. Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield are back in the remake of one of the best entries in the Resident Evil series.

The reveal trailer started off from the perspective of mouse which threw me off but when I saw that zombie take a chunk out of that police officer’s neck, I was hoping that it was RE2 Remake. One bullet to the zombie’s head later, we saw Leon’s youthful face and I jumped out of my chair with joy.

I spent the rest of the trailer being very hyped and my jaw touching the floor. RE2 Remake is using the RE Engine, the same engine that powered RE7. I would argue that RE2 Remake looks better than RE7 graphically.

Then there are the videos of gameplay demos and oh my word, it just looks so good. The characters, the zombies, Raccoon City Police Department, it all looks so damn good. Do yourselves a favour and look at this Resident Evil 2 Remake video by Maximilian Dood. It shows off the game wonderfully.

I know, I know, I’m gushing all over RE2 Remake but it looks absolutely amazing. I have a feeling that this will set a precedent for other video game remakes. *Cough* Final Fantasy VII Remake *cough*.

 

1. Ghosts of Tsushima

I was looking forward to seeing the gameplay of Ghosts of Tsushima but I never thought it would be that good, that it would become my “game of E3”.

The gameplay started with the main character Jin, appearing from a forest with his horse and the opening seconds of this gameplay was breathtaking. When the Jin reached the cliff overlooking the grasslands, I was speechless. It was a gorgeous view of 13th century Japan.

Then we come to the gameplay which looked slow (in a good way), methodical and brutal. Jin killed one of the Mongol soldiers with a single strike and blood splattered across the ground. More brutality ensues but the end scene where Jin has a showdown whilst leaves are blowing between him and his opponent and is being rained upon by fire arrows is something to behold. Not only is this scene graphically beautiful but it is also incredibly tense. I felt the tension in the showdown grow, it was brilliantly done.

Well done Sucker Punch. Ghosts of Tsushima looks fantastic and I can’t wait to see more of it. I’ll say this now, Ghosts of Tsushima is one of the best looking games I’ve ever seen.

 

Honorable Mentions: Soul Calibur VI. I’m already sold on Soul Calibur VI. My main characters are in and the gameplay that has been shown off is very good.

Dragon Quest XI. This is a day one for me. I’ve seen enough gameplay and I now just want the game to release.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. I love the Yakuza series and Fist of North Star is my favourite anime of all time so this is a day one. It’s awesome that they are localizing it as I was very tempted to import it.

Yakuza Kiwami 2. This is a day one purchase which should come as no surprise to anyone that knows me well. Expect a review of Yakuza Kiwami 2 on here in the future.

Metro Exodus. Whilst I am slightly annoyed by the delay, I completely understand. Take all the time you need 4A Games. I can wait.

Dying Light. The announcement of Dying Light 2 was a surprise. I enjoyed the first game quite a bit so I am interested in the sequel.

Crackdown 3. I enjoyed the bombastic trailer that was shown and I am still looking forward to it despite the delay. I just hope that this is the last delay as I am getting annoyed with the game getting delayed over and over.

 

E3 2018 had something for everyone, it was a fantastic event. No company won E3, gamers did.
